In 1914 Garrett Morgan patented his 1912 invention the Safety Hood and Smoke Protector a device which allowed the user to breathe clean air along the floor and had moist sponges to improve the quality of inhaled air. The invention that led the way and financed these inventions was hair straightening cream accidentally invented by Morgan.
Garrett Morgan was known as the inventor of the safety hood an early gas mask which was named after him called the Morgan Safety Hood. He also gained credit for his invention of mechanical traffic signals.
Morgan also invented numerous other products. In 1916 he patented his version of the gas mask. Morgan demonstrated his superior design when a group of miners were trapped in a shaft under Lake Erie. He immediately received orders for his product from fire departments and mine owners across the United States and Europe.
It wasnt until 1916 when Morgan made the national news wire because he was able to use his gas mask along with a team of volunteers to reach 32 men who had been trapped in a mining tunnel under Lake Erie. With the gas masks on they were able to safely retrieve the men.
